What I'm Taking Time for Right Now - Car Organization

A few weeks ago, I was in a car accident. Thankfully, we’re all okay, but my car was totaled. My old car was paid off, and I’d planned to drive it until it died—mission accomplished, just a little earlier than expected! Now, I’m the proud owner of a brand new (to me) 2021 Subaru Forester. It's the nicest car I've ever owned, and I'm determined to keep it in the best shape possible, even with a toddler and three dogs!

I’ve been researching car organization tips, but most of what I found were overly aesthetic setups full of unnecessary junk. That’s not my style, so here’s what I’m doing to keep my car clean and organized without going overboard:

  • Headrest Purse Hooks: These simple hooks hang right from the metal posts of your car’s headrest, and they are a game-changer! They’re perfect for keeping bags off the floor, preventing them from sliding around and spilling while you drive. I use them for my purse, my son's car bag (which is stocked with diapers, wipes, snacks, a changing pad, and a few small toys), and even grocery bags. They’re inexpensive, sturdy, and keep everything accessible while freeing up floor space.
  • Passenger Seat Net: If you've been around for a while, you know how much I love my giant water bottle, but I admit it can be a struggle to keep it from rolling onto the floor while driving. Enter the passenger seat net! It’s a stretchy mesh organizer that attaches to the back of the seat, providing a handy spot to secure things like my drink, snacks, the mail, whatever I have on me at the time. I can grab what I need easily, and nothing ends up under the seat or worse, spilled everywhere.
  • Trash Can: One of the biggest sources of car clutter is trash—receipts, wrappers, and random bits of paper. I found the perfect solution in a small, discreet snack container from the Dollar Tree. It fits neatly inside the center console and works great as a mini trash can. It’s out of sight, but convenient enough to actually use, and I just empty it whenever I stop for gas. It's a budget-friendly, practical alternative to bulky or over-designed car trash cans.
  • Car Emergency Kit: Living in an area where the weather can be unpredictable, especially in winter, having a well-stocked car emergency kit is essential. Mine includes a snow scraper, a collapsible shovel for those surprise snowfalls, a blanket, and other items like jumper cables and a first-aid kit. It’s compact but full of tools I might need in a pinch. Tip: I also stuck my car manual in here to take back that valuable space in my glove box!
  • On-the-Go Essentials: There are a few items I always find myself reaching for when I’m out and about, so I keep them stocked in my car: hand sanitizer, lotion (because I hate when my hands feel dry!), chapstick, tissues, gum, hair ties, a pen, and even an umbrella. These little things make a big difference, especially with a toddler in tow, and I’ve got them all neatly tucked away in the glove compartment and side door pockets.

I’d love to hear what organization tips work for you!
